A low cloud hangs over the summit of Mitra Peak, a pyramid-shaped mountain at Milford Sound in Fiordland National Park on New ZealandÔs South Island. Fiordland National Park is known for its glacier-carved fiords and powerful waterfalls. Milford Sound's weather can be very unpredictable and is recorded as the wettest inhabited place in New Zealand and one of the wettest places on earth with an average rainfall of 182 days annually. Milford Sound was discovered in 1823 when sealer John Grono named it Milford Sound after Milford Haven in his birthplace of Wales in the UK. The Cleddau River, which flows into the fiord, was also named after the same named river in Milford Haven in Wales.
