Another methodto attain the same end is to use Mr. Chews falsedies. But to change false dies and false bottoms 374 The Journal of The Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa. June 1908 takes up time and c ppages and is costly in spares. I take it that all niillmen areendeavouring to crush a large quantity of rock, and to crush it cheaply in the shortest space oftime. I make the above fact my excuse forintroducing the following sketch of a shallowfront mortar box. With such a box the dies ranrn down to the flange which holds them inposition and the discharge maintained evenly allthe way down bysimply changing the chuck Mockas the dies ?4m& FIG. n.—SKETCH OF BOX. A shallow front mortar box will not cost any more to construct than those at present in use, and no extra spares are required. The chuck blocks can be changed at any convenient time as easily as a screen is changed. For this box Iwould advocate the use of a 15-in. screen insteadof 12 in., so as to lake full advantage of thesplash. This box will cost less in liners, as willbe seen on reference to the sketch, and there willbe less iii>n or steel used in easting them. Water let into box, as shown by arrows, willfollow dies down t» the bottom of the box. Withliners made as per sketch, it will not be necessarytn take nut false bottoms when changing liners. By decreasing the height of chuck blocks A asthe die wears, a level discharge can be maintaineduntil the die is worn down to the flange B (whichholds the die in position >. Unfortunately, I was not allowed to spend anymoney in partitioning o
