Thereare two hose carts and one thousand five hundredfeet of hose. The water supply is drawn from LakeChabot. The hydrants are within two blocks of eachother and the pressure is sufficient to throw an inchstream one hundred and forty-seven and one-half feetwithout an engine. The public school of the towncontains eight rooms and accommodates over five hun-dred children, who are in daily attendance. SaintMarys Convent has a school in which two hundredpupils are carefully taught. There are three churches,the Methodist, Roman Catholic, and Presbyterian, andmission work among the Portuguese is conducted by a PLATE 26. The Oalvland, San Leandro and Hayward ElectricRailway runs half-hourly trains from Oakland throughSan Leandro and San Lorenzo to Hayward, all in thistownship. The latter town is about five miles fartherout from Oakland. San Lorenzo, a small village, liesbetween San Leandro and Hayward. In and aroundSan Lorenzo is the belt in which large quantities ofcherries are grown, as well as other fine fruits, such asapricots, pears and peaches. As early as 1854 an at-tempt was made to create a township at this place,mainly with a view of securing the county seat on the score of its central locatio
