FEED PUMPS The boiler feed pumps were supplied by G. & J. Weir, Ltd.,Cathcart, and consist of four of this firms well-known singledirect-acting pumps, series III. type, each 9>4 ins. diameterby 12^ ins. steam cylinder by 24-in. stroke. Each pump iscapable of delivering 8000 gallons of water per hour at 12double strokes per minute. These pumps are single-cylinder,double-acting and vertical. The steam is used expansivelyand the cut-off can be regulated from the outside while. December i, 1906.] STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. 1041 the pumps are working, thus re-ducing the steam consumption. CONVEYORS The overhead coal bunkers inthe boiler house are capable of con-taining 2000 tons of coal, and avery complete system of coal con-veying gear has been installed byThe New Conveyor Company,Ltd., for feeding these and at thesame time for dealing with theashes from the boiler fires. Themethod of dealing with the coaland ashes is briefly as follows: Coal may either be brought inby barges on the canal which runsat right angles with the boilerhouse, or by means of carts. Ifby the former means, the coal isdischarged by hand on to a conveyor of the Robbins typewhich runs the full length of thebasin. This conveyor is capableof dealing with 60 tons of coal perhour when running at a speed of200 ft. per minute, and has its top rollers of cast iron spaced out 5 ft. apart, and the bottom roll-ers spaced about 10 ft. apart. The end drums are 30 ins
