Tintern Abbey and River Wye, Tintern Pava, Chepstow, Monmouthshire. The river is still tidal at this point. First Cistercian foundation in Wales,1131 by Norman lord of Chepstow Walter de Clare (or William fitz Richard) monks came from L’Aumône, near Chartres. Community of monks reached 20 in C13th. Great rebuilding began under Bigod at end of C13th. Outside the main area of Welsh English fighting so it survived well. Edward II spent 2 nights here while fleeing the army of his wife Queen Isabella & her lover Roger Mortimer. Abbey dissolved in 1536. Detail of fallen roof boss carved with oak leaves. St Tewdric (Theodoric) retired as a hermit to Tintern, was fatally wounded in battle here c. 470 when called out of retirement to lead his people against invading
