In other cases dilatationmust precede exploration, which should be done by meansof the finger in the uterus. If placental fragments arefound, the curette should be used, removing all rough andprotruding parts of the surface until the interior is quitesmooth. CHAPTER XIX. DISEASES OF THE UTERUS (Continued). DISEASES OF THE ENDOMETRIUM. The mucous membrane lining the cavity and the cervicalcanal of the uterus is termed the endometrium. Itdiffers from mucous membranes in general in having nosubmucous layer (Fig. 54); this is due to the fact that. Fig. 54.—Horizontal section of the body of the uterus of an adult; yA natural size (Henle). nearly the whole of the muscular tissue of the uterus ismorphologically muscularis mucosae (John Williams). Com-parative anatomy supports this view. The endometrium ispeculiar in undergoing rhythmic changes during sexual lifecoincident with menstruation; when the uterus is occupiedby an oosperm (fertilized ovum) the endometrium ofthe uterine cavity is changed into a thick membrane knownas a decidua, which is incorporated with and shed coinci-dently with the placenta. Menstrual and decidual changesare entirely confined to the endometrium lining the uterinecavity. The mucous membrane lining the cervical canal iscalled the cervical endometrium. The endometrium ofthe uterine cavity has a smooth surface, it is soft, spongy, red, and covered with ciliated columnar epithelium. The168 DISEASES OF THE UTERUS. 169 glands which beset it
