Herring (Clupea harengus and Clupea pallasi): early 1900s painting signed by German wildlife artist Paul Flanderky (1872-1937), published in the revised 4th edition (1911-18) of ‘Brehms Tierleben’ (Brehm’s Animal Life). The Tierleben or Thierleben first appeared in 1860 as a 10-volume zoological reference work or encyclopaedia under the direction of zoologist, writer and traveller Alfred Edmund Brehm (1829-1884). By 1911, it had grown to 13 volumes. Paul Flanderky was trained at the Royal Porcelain Manufactory and the Museum of Applied Arts, both in Berlin, and also at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He qualified as a drawing teacher and taught at the Lessing-Gymnasium, a Berlin high school. As well as his paintings for Brehms Tierleben, he also illustrated children’s books and biology text books and created collectable images of amphibians, spiders and worms for the Stollwerck chocolate company. Herring usually forage in large schools or shoals, typically in shallow, temperate coastal waters. They belong to the Clupeidae family, and while other fish are often known as herrings, scientists accept only two species: the Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) and Pacific herring (Clupea pallasi). Herring have long been a mainstay of European commercial fishing and, as with other oily fish such as sardines and mackerel, have grown in popularity as the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids have become widely known.
