A late 19th century view of Hoyland Silkstone Colliery, situated at Platts Common in Hoyland, close to the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway line near Birdwell. Named after the Silkstone coal seam it was sunk to exploit, coal was mined from multiple seams under land leased from several landlords.
