View from the top of the Scala Contarini del Bovolo staircase, Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo, Venice, Italy
The Contarini del Bovolo Palace is located in the district of San Marco, between the Canal Grande, Rio de San Salvador, Rio di San Luca and Rio Fuseri. The Venetian word “bovolo” means snail and refers to the shape of a spiral snail shell (Scala del Bovolo). During renovations in the 15th century, the balconies with balustrades and the spiral staircase were added to the already existing palace, which consists of two joined buildings. This gave the courtyard where the palace was located a completely different look. Over the centuries, each owner has had his own influence on the palace and this can partly be seen in the structure.
