The fortieth parallel of north latitude,the dividing line between the states of Nebraska and Kansas, was designatedas the base line and ref|uired to be marked. The first party arriving at the point where the survey was to be com-menced, went to great pains with the instruments they had at hand andtheir knowledge of the business, to locate the exact line of the fortiethparallel. The first thing to be done was to establish the initial point andmark the same; this was done bv the erection of a large iron FIRST LOG SCHOOL HOUSE, GRANT PRP^CINCT, ERECTED IN 1865.
