PIC SHOWS PRINCE PHILIP AT CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY ON THURSDAY 23RD JUNE 2011 AT THE HONORARY DEGREE CEREMONY WHICH WAS HIS FINAL PUBLIC DUTY AT THE UNIVERSITY BEFORE HIS RETIREMENT AS CHANCELLOR. The Duke of Edinburgh carried out his final public duty today (Thurs) as Chancellor of Cambridge University. Prince Philip, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday, will stand down from the role next week after a remarkable 34 years. He conferred eight honorary degrees, including one for theatre director Trevor Nunn, for the last time this morning at a special ceremony at the university's Senate House. He proudly led the procession around the courtyard of the Senate House as crowds looked on and cheered. "The University has been fortunate beyond measure to have had the Duke of Edinburgh as our Chancellor for these past three-and-a-half decades," said Vice Chancellor Prof Sir Leszek Borysiewicz. "Prince Philip is held in the greatest respect and affection here: there is hardly a corner of the university and its colleges he has not visited, always showing the keenest interest in our students, our teaching and our research across all disciplines."
