. Electric railway journal . Works of the General ElectricCompany has developed vacuum Mazda lamps of similarappearance in the 25-watt, 40-watt and 60-watt concentrated filament construction gives greatervertical distribution of light than the regular Mazdalamps of corresponding wattages. The new lamps will, therefore, be employed where natural distribution oflight downward is required. These lamps will be made in the same sized bulbs asthe corresponding regular Mazda lamps, will have thesame spherical watts per candle-power efficiency and willhave a rated average life of 600 hours.

Outdoor Substation The outdoor substation illustrated is one of the newdesigns of the Transmission Engineering Company,Pittsburgh, Pa., and provides for mounting the trans-formers on the ground. It was installed for the Vir-ginia Western Power Company at Covington, Va. Theinstallation consists of three 100-kw single-phase transformers. The transmission system is oper-ated at 44,000 volts and is about 64 miles OUTDOOR SUBSTATION AT COVINGTON, VA. The transmission line is dead-ended to the steel towerwhich carries the Burke horn gap switch, lightningarrester and fuse. A steel pole is used to support oneend of the high-voltage bus wires over the transformers. This construction is well adapted where the trans-formers are too large to be carried on a platform abovethe ground. In a recent interview, Maurice Coster, manager ofthe foreign department Westinghouse Electric & Manu-facturing Company, expressed the opinion that if theBritish government takes over many factories to makewar materials directly, according to powers granted bythe House of Commons on March 9, many orders formaterial of a non-military character are likely to cometo this country.
