Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland, UK. The Mercat Cross of Newton upon Ayr. Newton Market Cross now stands near the New Bridge. Its original site was in the middle of the Main Street, opposite Cross Street, now King Street. It was moved from there a few years before 1847. The cross has a plain square shaft with a base. Round the capital are the words 'Newton Cross - 1778'. In the background is The weather-worn high chamfered shaft and square socketed base stand on a modern pedestal; they are surmounted by a square plinth with a ball finial. The inscription is barely legible.
