This is a colorized portrait of Walt Whitman (1819-1892) taken in 1869 when he was 50 years of age. Walt Whitman Jr., was an influential American poet, essayist, and journalist. Known as the father of free verse, he incorporated both transcendentalism and realism in his writings. His verse collection “Leaves of Grass”, first published in 1855, is a landmark in American literature. Despite controversy over its overt sensuality, it reached out to the common person with an American epic. Whitman’s legacy remains strong in American literature.
