This ore is freighted by wagon to therailroad at Raymond in Madera County and shipped to the county is said to have had the first smelter in the State, the ruinsof which are still standing not far from Green Mountain. The copperbelt in this county extends for forty miles and considerable copper orewas mined in the early days, but the industry has dwindled to veryinsignificant proportions. Those properties that are operating at pres-ent will be described and a few of the new groups mentioned, but forthe older and idle properties reference can be found in Bulletin , Copper Resources of California, issued by this Bureau in Remains of what is said to have been the first smelter in California, near Green Mountain in southern Mariposa County, California. Green Mountain Copper Group. This group, which consists of eightmineral claims and 26 acres of patented agricultural land, is situatedin Sec. 3, T. 8 S., R. 18 E., M. D. M., about 8 miles by wagon roadnorthwest of the railroad at Raymond in Madera County and ownedby the Legioneer Gold Mining Company and J. B. Pearce. Two of theeight claims are patented, namely, the Copper Queen and Buena Copper Chief, Buster Brown, Cuban Nigger, Flotsom, Jetsam, andAmador claims are not patented. The first claims were located in 1861 MARIPOSA COUNTY. 573 and have been worked and shut down at various times. The ores con-sist of copper oxides and carbonates.
