CRISPR Cas12a protein, illustration

Illustration of Cas12a (CRISPR associated protein 12a) complexed with its target DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid, red and green) and guide RNA (ribonucleic acid, blue and orange) molecules. CRISPR-Cas complexes are used in genome engineering to cut DNA. Cas12a cuts both strands of the target DNA, but at slightly different locations, resulting in staggered ends with an overhang of four to five bases.
