Jaundice. Close-up of the eye of a patient suffering from jaundice. Yellowing of the white (sclera) of the eye and of the surrounding facial skin can be seen. The yellowing symptoms of jaundice are caused by an excess of bilirubin, a bile pigment, in the blood. Jaundice is the chief sign of many disorders of the liver and gall- bladder. These disorders may be caused by viral infection (such as in hepatitis A), liver cancer, gallstones, or damage to the liver in cirrhosis. The symptom of jaundice thus requires proper diagnosis of the underlying condition (a blood test is common), before appropriate treatment can be given.
