Total solar eclipse geometry, illustration. Total solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun. The lines in this diagram show the shadow (umbra, dark grey) cast by the Moon, with the partial shadow (penunmbra) shown in light grey. A partial solar eclipse is seen from within the penunmbra. Total solar eclipses usually occur less than once a year, and can only be seen from a small area of the Earth's surface. Totality usually lasts for a few minutes.
