The well known Thomas doublesplint for disease of one or both hipjoints (Fig. i) is rendering great servicein the treatment of that affection. has added to this splint a pel-vic band, a support for the shoulders,neck and head, and two sliding footpieces, as shown in Fig. 2. The two cross-bars,the pelvic band, and the band reachingto below the axillae, support the pelvisand body laterally. The lower extrem-ities are kept in position by cross-barssupporting the thigh and lower third ofleg. The rest of the splint consists ofthe support for the shoulders, neck, head and both feet, so that the entirebody is supported, as shown in Fig. 3. The first object in the treatment ofspinal caries, weak or injured spine, isto devise means whereby the weight ofthe head and upper extremities is takenoff the spine. This is obtained byplacing the child and retaining it dur-ing the whole time of treatment in theuninterrupted recumbent position. Bythe-aid of this splint the surgeon isenabled to carry out this treatment, andthe splint being applied next to theskin, the child can perform its naturalfunctions without the removal of theapparatus.
