The Four Fathers of the Western Church: Saint Gregory the Great painted by Gerard Seghers. Pope Gregory I (also known as Saint Gregory the Great) was pontiff from AD590 to AD604. He was the 64th pope. It was he who introduced the plainchant singing known as Gregorian Chant.
