Splitting the atom. Professor Cockroft in the Cavendish Laboratory, where early attempts were made to split the atom under the guidance of Prof. Rutherford. They succeeded. Prof. Cockroft contributed to the development of the atomic bomb. Professor Stephen Hawking used the Cavendish Laboratory as did many British born Nobel prize winners.
