March 1991 Kurdish uprising at the end of the first Gulf War. Saddam Hussein's forces blew up the bridge between Iraq and Turkey. Khabur gate crossing in Iraqi Kurdistan to Silopi in Turkey. Kurdish Peshmerga from the Kurdistan Democratic Party claim victory and establish their own authority that becomes the Kurdistan Autonomous Area KAA. Border post with razor wire put in place during fighting with Saddam's forces. Entry to Turkey became impossible except by dangerous routes through rivers and landmined mountain passes.
