Roman consul Manlius Torquatus condemns his son to death for disobeying military rules.

This illustration, which dates to the early 1900s, depicts the early Roman tale of Manlius Torquatus and his son. It was 340 , and Manlius Torquatus was consul of Rome. In a war against the Latins, he ordered that no soldier was to leave his post. His son, however, thought he had a chance to defeat some Latins and left his post. He then brought the spoils of his victory to his father, as shown here. His father, following his command, had his son executed - "Manlian discipline" became the phrase that described such strict observation of military rule.
