Naples. Coloured radar satellite image of Naples (white area just right of centre), Italy. North is towards the top. This image was made by combining three frames taken on different dates. Differences between the frames show as areas of colour. Farm- land in the agricultural plain northwest of Naples appears red, blue and green, the different colours indicating growth of different crops between frames. Colours on the sea are due to differences in wave patterns. Mountains surround the area. The conical mountain at centre right is the active volcano Mount Vesuvius, which buried Pompeii in AD 79. Image produced by European Radar Satellite 1. Area approximately 100km x 100km.
