Oil refinery. Night-time view of an oil refinery. In the refinery, crude oil is heated and passed through catalytic cracking towers to split its larger hydrocarbon molecules into simpler chemicals. The resulting components, from heavy industrial tars through to light fuels such as petrol and gas, are then separated. Finally, these components, called fractions, are processed. This is the BP refinery near Port Talbot in Wales.
