The house of the Roman emperors, adorned withfigures of the Caesars, associates Hildesheim with HILDESHEIM St. Andrews churchyard with two of the oldesthouses. That on the right goes by the name ofthe inverted HANOVER AND ITS NEIGHBOURHOOD 173 the mistress of the world ; and a treasure of Romansilver, found by a workman as in 1868 he wasdigging the foundations of a house on the Galgen-berg, proves the presence of a Roman colony. Theoriginal Hildesheim silver treasure undoubtedlybelonged to some noble Roman of the Augustanage, and is exhibited in the Industrial Museumin BerUn. It consists of the table silver of aRoman equestrian, and is among the most costlyand beautiful remains of antique art that have comedown to us. A facsimile of the whole made by aParis silversmith was presented to Hildesheim byold Emperor William. Another remarkable town near at hand isLlineburg, from which Prince Bismarck derivedone of his titles. It is full of many remarkableexamples of old German architecture. It is analmost unknown treasure-house, presenting manyexamples of mediaeval house-building. It is lyingin obscurity, but the day is not far distant whenstudents of art will find their way hither. It
