Sunset at Mexican Hat, Utah, USA. The small community of Mexican Hat is named after the distinctive balanced rock about half a mile north of the roadstop. Mexican Hat lies along the San Juan River in the heart of the US southwest red rock desert country. Mexican Hat rock itself was sculpted over millenia by the forces of wind, rain and ice. It is 60 feet wide and lies upon a much more eroded smaller rock which gives it the look of a Mexican Sombrero made of stone. The rock is located in the southeast part of Utah near well-known Monument Valley, and is popular with climbers.
