Coast Guard Lands the Marines at Saipan. With the Coast Guard shield on its blunt nose and Coast Guardsmen at its controls, a Marine-packed LCVP bears down upon the beach of Saipan, Japanese base less than 1,500 miles from Tokyo. The Marines hold their fingers aloft with the "V For Victory" sign. They gained their victory after fierce enemy resistance that cost nearly 10,000 American casualties in the first two weeks of the invasion.
