Gaius Sallustius Crispus (86 BC), Roman historian, commonly known by the anglicised name Sallust. Surviving works of Sallust include his account of the Catiline conspiracy and his history of the Jugurthine War (112 BC to 105 BC), fought between Rome and Numidia. The Catiline conspiracy was the name given to a supposed attempt in 63 BC by senator Cataline to overthrow the Roman Republic. Sallust, a supporter of Julius Caesar, was appointed governor of the Roman province Africa Nova (Numidia), accumulating wealth used to develop the famed Gardens of Sallust in Rome. Artwork from 'Histoire des Romains' (1883).
