Camp dels Ninots archaeological site in Caldes de Malavella in the region of La Selva, province of Gerona, Catalonia, Spain

About 5 million years ago, the Camp dels Ninots, in Caldes de Malavella, was a volcano where a lake with a rich ecosystem was later formed. The fossil remains that are found have been preserved in an extraordinary state of conservation. The large number of recovered fossils make this site an essential place to learn about the last 4 million years of our history. The information provided by the site allows us to know what the climate, environment and fauna were like at the time before the emergence of the genus Homo. It also makes it possible to explain one of the most important changes in the Earth's geological history, when about 2 million years ago the world entered the glacial/interglacial dynamics that marked human evolution. Caldes de Malavella is located halfway between the Costa Brava and the Sierra de las Guilleries, the Selva plain, rich in contrasts, heritage and tradition. Thus, Caldes de Malavella is located in a strategic place of communications, and for this reason, it has always been a land of passage and a land of footprints. The trace of all the civilizations that have inhabited our country is present in the town.
