The battalion is quartered in agreat quadrangular, castellated structure of Tudorarchitecture, the four stories of which contain176 rooms. It was completed in 1849, the Aca-demic building in 1893, and these, with Grant or WEST POINT, EW YORK. Each Congressional district andterritory—also the District of Columbia—is entitled tohave one cadet at the academy, the cadet to be named bythe Re(sresentative in Congress. There are also ten ap-pointments at large, specially conferred by the Presidentof the United States. The number of students is thuslimited to 367. Appointments are usually made one yearin advance of date of admission, and may be made eitherafter competitive examination or given direct, at theoption of the Representative. The Congressman, shouldhe desire, may nominate a legally qualified alternate, whowill be examined with the regular nominee and admittedin the event of his success and the latters failure to passthe prescribed preliminary examinations. Appointees to the Military Academy must be between17 and 22 years of age, free from any infirmity, and able topass a care
