A Highway for Our God.—As inthe first century the imperial authority ofRome aided the Church by furnishing facili-ties of travel over her military highways,so the commercial enterprise of to-day isanswering the call, Prepare ye the way ofthe Lord; make straight in the desert ahighway for our God. The formal open-ing of the railway from Matadi, at themouth of the Congo, to Stanley Pool, adistance of 250 miles, is an event of nolittle interest to missions. It connects byquick and easy transit the interior of Africawith the ocean. It opens to commerce theCongo valley, the greatest river basin ofthe world, with its 3000 miles of naviga-ble waterway and its 30,000,000 of popu-lation. The forty-five little steamersalready plying on the waters of the upperCongo will not suffice for the increasingtrade. The india-rubber industry aloneamounted in 1897 to $3,000,000. Wh
