An old engraving of a strongman stunt involving using the force of a sledgehammer to strike a heavy blow to an anvil resting on the stomach of a ‘strongman’. It is from Victorian book of the 1890s on sports, games and pastimes. I reality, the heavy mass of the anvil absorbs almost all of the sledgehammer’s force. Since the dawn of time men have competed against each other in feats of strength and power. This eventually found its way into circus entertainment and most strongmen acts included bending iron bars and having piles of bricks or blocks of granite smashed on the stomach.
