Heimmediately enlisted and was appointedLieutenant-Colonel of the Fourteenth Infan-try, which furnished several com-panies for service in the state in guardingthe Aqueduct and in drilling recruits andfurnishing non-commissioned officers forservice abroad. In December, 192 1, he wasappointed colonel on the HeadquartersStaff, a rank he still holds. His father w^asForn in Germai^y and came to the UnitedStates in 1848. 174 HISTORY OF AMERICAN COL.
