Appomattox, Virginia - Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, site of General Robert E. Lee's surrender to General Ulysses S. Grant in 1865 to end the American Civil War. Thirty thousand safe conduct passes, called paroles, were printed inside the Clover Hill Tavern. The paroles allowed surrendered Confederate soldiers to return to their homes safely.
