MAZES - VILLARD DE HONNECOURT Maze drawing, in the sketchbook (or model-book) of the thirteenth century French architect, Villard de Honnecourt. To a very large extent, this maze plan (which is really the plan of a dancing ground) resembles that in the nave pavement of Chartres Cathedral. This drawing is not of a pure maze, for once having embarked upon its pathway, there is no chance of becoming lost: the path leads inexorably to the inner circle. The dragonfly at the top of the dancing circle does not appear to be linked with it in any obvious symbolism.
