Mortimer seized by the King. Roger Mortimer was the de facto ruler of England and the regent of the young king who had come to the throne at the age of fourteen. When he was only seventeen years old, Edward led a coup against Mortimer who was taken by surprise at Nottingham Castle on 19 October 1330. Mortimer was executed, and Edward III’s personal reign began.
