Therewere no roads and no suggestions of civilization, and indeedno indiealioTi of the presence of a white inhabitant otherthan that afforded by an occasional log house, so entirelyisolated to be practically beyond the reiich of any neigh-borly courtesy. Another indication of life was found inthe Indian trail followed by tlie tribes in their westwardwanderings, and used for a time as a highway until moreimproved opportunities of travel were introduced. Here Mr. Tripp erected a log house, which, rude as itwas, afforded shelter for himself and family, and was to thema home embracing all the comfort
