A painting of Charles Pierre Baudelaire (1821-1867) by Jean Désiré Gustave Courbet (1819-1877) was a French painter who led the Realism movement in 19th-century French painting. Baudelaire was a French poet who's poems exhibit mastery in the handling of rhyme and rhythm, contain an exoticism inherited from Romantics, but are based on observations of real life. He also produced notable work as an essayist and art critic.
