The lace on this rarecurio is the Venetian Point ofthe sixteenth century ; it formsan edging to a cut open-workpiece of parchment stretchedupon a frame and supported bya thick stick which forms thehandle. In the time of Henry England, long-handled fansfor out-door use were employedby both men and women. Thegentlemen had prodigious fans, and they had handles at leasthalf a yard long; with thesetheir daughters were often-timescorrected. Fans were used bythe judges on circuit, possiblyto stir the hot, close air of thecourt. More than one engravingby Abraham Bosse shows a fan.
