Pile of Asian Pears for sale, with a plate of bites to sample, at Draper Girls Country Farm near Hood River, Oregon, USA. This is stop #16 of the 2014 Fruit Loop. Pyrus pyrifolia is a pear tree species native to China, Taiwan, Japan, and Korea. The tree's edible fruit is known by many names, including: Asian pear, Chinese pear, Korean pear, Japanese pear, Japanese Apple Pear, Taiwan pear, and sand pear. The fruits are not generally baked in pies or made into jams because they have a high water content and a crisp, grainy texture, very different from the buttery European varieties. They are commonly served raw and peeled.
