Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) egg from a commercial hatchery. Poor egg quality is a major constraint in the expansion of the aquaculture industry. Infection can cause significant mortality among developing eggs and contributes to severe economic losses. Clean water, sufficient dissolved oxygen and disinfection of the eggs to remove fungus and other disease agents improves successful hatching.
