The Sydney suburb of The Rocks, settled at colonization in 1788, contains many heritage-listed landmarks and is Australia's oldest suburb. Its buildings, stairways and archways were built with local sandstone, hence the area's name. Until the 1870s it was a slum where 'razor gangs' loitered by night in laneways. It is now a history-filled tourist precinct surrounded by Dawes Point, Millers Point and Barangaroo, often considered a part of The Rocks district.
