So long as the foot remains in a healthycondition, there is little danger of the occurrence of this dis-ease. Even though the foot be strained very considerably,and a high degree of inflammatory action be produced, thisdisease will hardly arise, unless the inflammation becomeschronic. The author regards its origin as mainly due to acontracted condition of the feet, which, in fact, is the predis-posing OSSIFICATION OF THE LATERAL CARTILAGES, 293 Rarely, indeed, is navicular-joint lameness found existing infeet that have open heels and elastic frogs. If from any causethese frogs lose their moisture, they also lose their elasticity,and the foot therefore strikes the ground with a jar; inflamma-tion of a chronic character sets in ; the synovia (joint-oil) be-comes absorbed; and caries of the bones is established, whichdestroys their articular surfaces and causes excessive , owing to some new injury, acute inflammationsets in, causing new depositions of bone to be thrown out, anduniting the three bones together; which union is called anchy-losis. This condition may be known by stifiness, and theanimal walking upon the toe. The symptoms of this disease have been confounded withthose of another disease of the foot, which has been discoveredby recent investigations.
