Bunion surgery assessment. Coloured X-rays showing a 70-year-old woman's foot with a bunion before (left) and after (right) surgery. This is the right foot, shown bearing weight. A bunion (hallux valgus) is a deformity characterised by sideways deviation of the big toe, creating a protruding joint between the toe and the metatarsal bone. The surgery (a bunionectomy) involves the placement of screws to preserve the straightening of the joint.
