But the cool courage ofthe English soldiers and Wellingtons imperturbable calm ren-dered all the fierce French attacks for a long time , however, the English center began to waver. Napoleon was imprisoned on the distant volcanicisland of St. Helena; and to France was dictated a peace moresevere than that of the previous year. She had to restore theworks of art, to cede Savoy to Sardinia, and other smaller stripson her northern and eastern frontier.
