MALLESON, With Portraits and Plafis EIGHTH EDITION LONDON SEELEY AND CO. LIMITED 38 Great Russell Street 1901 -1^ f^f3/ PREFACE. In writing this short History of the Indian Mutinyof 1857 I have aimed at the compilation of awork which, complete in itself, should narratethe causes as well as the consequences of amovement unforeseen, undreamt of, sudden andswift in its action, and which taxed to the utmostthe energies of the British people. Precedingwriters on the same subject, whilst dealing veryamply with the consequences, have, with oneexception, but dimly shadowed forth the very actors in the Mutiny failed to detectthem. But the greased cartridge was neverissued to the gindianmutinyof1801mall
