Exophthalmic goiter,^ also called Gravess disease, or Basedowsdisease, is an affection of unknown etiology, usually characterized byexophthalmos (prominence of the eyeballs), tachycardia, a peculiarform of muscular tremor, and enlargement of the thyroid gland; one ormore of these so-called cardinal symptoms may be absent. It is clearlyan intoxication—a toxemia; the character and origin of the poison arenot definitely known, but the facts at our disposal indicate that it is 1 Kocher, Ueber Morbus Basedowi, 1902; 1423 references.
