Francois Athanase de Charette de la Contrie, French royalist counter-revolutionary leader, 1790s. Charette (1763-1796) commanded the royalist forces in the Wars of the Vendee (1793-1796). After the royalist uprising was defeated by republican General Louis Lazare Hoche, Charette was executed by firing squad in Nantes on 29 March 1796.
