MEYER Chief Engineer and General Superintendent Montreal & SouthernCounties Railway, Montreal, Canada In order to reduce the damage by collisions of itsheavy interurban cars this company has found it de-sirable to install spring bumpers or shock absorberson its cars. These are of a very simple design andwere constructed and applied by the Ottawa Car &Manufacturing Company. The shock absorber consists of a corrugated bumperblock of malleable iron, a pair of double helical springs. SPRING SHOCK ABSORBER USED ON CARS OF CANADIANELECTRIC RAILWAY and a malleable iron stop block. These parts are shownin the drawing reproduced herewith. The stop block is securely riveted between two ofthe channel-iron platform knees, the casting beingshaped so as to provide room for a number of rivetssufficient to give a total shearing strength in excess ofthe total force which can be imposed upon them by thesprings, namely, about 40,000 lb. To relieve the rivets, however, the surfaces in contact are finished so as tointroduce considerable friction. The side of the stopblock in contact with the springs is furnished withbosses which act as sockets for the spring ends, andsimilar bosses are cast on the inside surface of the bumper block. The play of the bumper block is limitedby means of two 1-in. bolts passing from the stop blockto the bumper block. These bolts are provided withlock nuts. As stated above, the helical springs are double. Theouter, heavier one is made
